Let’s be honest — we’ve all daydreamed about stepping onto the 1st tee at Augusta National during Masters week. The roars echoing through the pines, the azaleas in full bloom, Rae’s Creek shimmering in the background…
But if you actually got the chance to tee it up with the course set up for The Masters, here’s the real question: how many shots would you get?
Spoiler alert: it’s more than you might think…
When Augusta National is set up for The Masters, it’s an entirely different beast. The tees are pushed back to more than 7,500 yards, the greens are lightning fast, and the pins are tucked tighter than a new glove.
For the pros, it’s tough. For the rest of us? It’s a whole different kind of challenge.
To work out how many shots you’d get, we’ve used some solid estimates. These figures are based on expert analyses and reports (as Augusta doesn’t publish official data). This is not an official Course or Slope Rating™, but rather an educated benchmark for comparison.
– Course Rating: 78.1
– Slope Rating: 141
– Par: 72
The unofficial Course Rating of 78.1 means a scratch golfer would expect to shoot 78 — six over par — under Masters conditions. The Slope Rating of 141 suggests a much steeper challenge for bogey golfers compared to a standard course (113 is the average).
So, if you’ve got a Handicap Index — no matter the number — you’ll be receiving strokes. And plenty of them!
Using the WHS™ formula, we’ve calculated your Course Handicap™ at Augusta from a Handicap Index® of 0.0 all the way to 54.0. Here’s what you’d be playing off:

It means:
Your Handicap Index® is calculated using the World Handicap System™, which takes your eight best scores from your last 20 rounds submitted, and gives you a number that truly reflects your game.

Now you know how many shots you’d get, the only thing left is to ask: what would you actually shoot at Augusta?
The fairways are wide but the margins are fine. And while you’d have a stack of strokes to help you out, you’d still need your best stuff.
