Can You Play Golf While Pregnant?

Date Published: 23/07/2025

Many women question whether it’s safe to exercise during pregnancy. Ultimately, this depends on your individual situation and it’s recommended to obtain medical advice from your doctor to ensure it’s safe to keep playing golf.

Staying active is an important part of maintaining a healthy pregnancy and golf offers an excellent, low-impact form of exercise to help you stay fit.

Is golf safe while pregnant?

While golf is safe for many pregnant women, we always recommend consulting your doctor to ensure it’s safe for you. Doctors can also provide personalised advice based on your personal circumstances.

When golfing while pregnant, there are a few things you should do:

  • Keep hydrated.
  • Use sun cream.
  • Wear comfortable, supportive shoes.
  • Take regular breaks.
  • Listen to your body – stop when you feel tired.

The benefits of golfing when pregnant

Playing golf when pregnant offers some great benefits, such as:

  • Improved mood – Exercise is known to boost moods and is an excellent way to socialise.
  • Reduced stress – As golf is usually played outdoors, the exposure to fresh air and scenic views contributes to reduced stress.
  • It helps to maintain strength and flexibility – As golf requires walking and swinging motions, it helps you build and maintain both strength and flexibility.
  • It enhances balance and coordination – As you get further into your pregnancy, being able to balance becomes more important.
  • It can increase vitamin D levels – As golf is typically played outdoors, regularly playing can increase your vitamin D levels.
  • It improves cardiovascular fitness – Golf is a low-impact activity that can improve cardiovascular fitness.

How to make golfing more comfortable while pregnant

Certain adjustments can be made to make golfing while pregnant more comfortable. This could include:

Making adaptations to your equipment and clothing

Wearing stretchy, breathable clothing like loose-fitted or stretchy trousers will help you keep cool and stay comfortable while playing golf. Wearing shoes with extra support is also recommended.

In terms of your golfing equipment, it may be worth using a longer putter to compensate for your change in stance and to help improve your balance and reduce lower back strain.

Change your swing

As your body changes, your swing will need to change too. You can widen your stance to improve your balance. You may also want to opt for a controlled swing rather than aiming to generate power. Practicing your short games is also recommended, as putting requires less exertion.

Plan your game

Playing during cooler times will help prevent overheating, allowing you to remain competitive on the course. Early morning or late in the evening is recommended.

You should also carry water and snacks around to help you stay hydrated and keep your energy levels up.

Understanding the course you’re playing on will help you stay aware of the terrain, preventing trips or falls.

Playing golf throughout each semester

The first trimester

In the first trimester, many women can carry on playing golf with minimal changes needing to be made. As a basic guideline, it’s recommended to:

  • Keep hydrated.
  • Wear breathable and comfortable clothes.
  • Use suncream and insect repellent.
  • Listen to your body and take breaks when you feel tired.

The second trimester

The second trimester is often associated with higher energy levels and less nausea. As a result, it’s recommended to:

  • Modify your swing to help with the changes in your body and centre of gravity.
  • Utilise a golf cart to reduce the amount of walking you need to do.
  • Wear supportive shoes with traction.
  • Stretch before and after playing.

The third trimester

In the third trimester, comfort should be prioritised. As a result, we recommend:

  • Playing 9 holes or less.
  • Avoid twisting in your swing.
  • Using a belly support band for added comfort.

Golf can be a great way to stay active, healthy, and happy during pregnancy, as long as you listen to your body and consult with your doctor.

With the right adjustments and a focus on comfort, many women can enjoy the game well into their pregnancy.
